Uttara Aarong の見学

We took our staff to Aarong, run by one of THE biggest NGO in Bangladesh. We learned a lot of their quality and the price. It was first time for our staff to visit such a big 6-story shop, because their price are quite expensive compare to local price. However, the price of their Nokshi-katha products are surprisingly cheap... if they are paying same wage as we do, the labour cost (without fabric+machine sawing cost) becomes about 70% of their selling price. I wonder how they manage to sell so cheaply as I know they are even using few layers of middlemen to collect products from Villages...

先日、工房のスタッフを連れてバングラデシュで最大のNGO組織が運営するAarongというデパートへ行き、売られているノクシカタの品質やデザイン、価格を見て回りました。工房から一番ちかいUttra Aarongは6階建てのビルすべてが売り場という大きなショップでどの商品もローカル市場よりも高価なこともあり、スタッフ達は初めての体験。高い、とは言ってもノクシカタ製品に関しては逆にとても安く感じました。iimonでは縫子さんにかなり良いお給料を払っている自信はありましたが、もしうちと同様の給料でやってもらったとすると縫子さんの給料だけで(材料費やミシン縫う作業代抜きで)売価の7割くらいになってしまいます。ノクシカタは手作業なので大量に作ったからといって縫子さんの工賃はほとんど減らせません。さらにAarongを運営しているNGOは縫子さんとの間に何階層も仲介人がいることを考えると、一体いくらの工賃を払っているのだろう…と不思議に思うとともに、私達のノクシカタの品質が十分に高いことも改めて確認できるイベントとなりました。
